In the fall of 2006, the policy-management studies senior seminar from nearby Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was tasked with creating a public relations DVD for a nonprofit organization in central Pennsylvania.

A group of three students selected the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. ATC mid-Atlantic regional office staffers Karen Lutz and John Luthy worked with the students throughout the project, providing talking points and messages to be conveyed, and reviewing the content for accuracy and clarity. The students also interviewed area A.T. volunteers and got some visuals and marketing guidance from ATC headquarters in Harpers Ferry. While the narrated DVD uses examples from the mid-Atlantic area, the messages are presented with a Trail-wide scope. The vision of the Trail, its history, partnerships, threats, and current ATC programs are covered quite thoroughly in 8:38 minutes. By publishing the production on the Internet, it is available to audiences anytime, anywhere.
